Artist Statement

Capturing the mood of a scene is paramount. When I am taking a photograph, I am

conscious that I am constructing images rather than taking snapshots. In this respect it is

like painting which takes a long time where you are very aware of what you are doing in

the process. Exposure in camera is only part of the final act of making the image. Using

the many tools available in the digital toolbox allows me to express what I see and feel

into the final photograph.

Beyond tools and technique, however, lies discovery. Photography is an art form of

observation, solitude, and patience. How an image is captured can be a fascinating

journey into the depths of personal realization.

Each image has its own story. I wander and observe the light, compositional elements,

and atmosphere, breaking each down into foundational elements. A solitary rock, cloud

movement, a lone mountain, a tree, fog or mist.

If someone looks upon my image and says, “ah-ha”, then they have seen something of

meaning to themselves. Whether or not it’s the same thing I saw is irrelevant, for I have

provided the vehicle for their transcendence.

Join Us November 28th for the Exhibit 40 Gala

We are thrilled to present our 40th Exhibit, which features the works by over 100 local artists. From photographs and paintings, to textile and sculpture, come view the pieces at MIP weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Join us for the Opening Gala on November 28, from 7-9pm. The exhibit will be on display until February 27, 2025.

Carol Priamo (photo above) is the featured artist of the exhibition. Priamo relocated to Hamilton thirteen years ago, and was inspired by the historic architecture, streetscapes, and neighbourhoods. Priamo combined her practices in photography, printmaking and collage to develop a new direction in mixed media collage: multi-layered, tapestry-like compositions of surrealistic expression.

AWP is a not-for-profit organization that creates opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents to the community. AWP began at McMaster Innovation Park in 2009. In our fifteen years, we have displayed over 7,200 pieces of art by over 4,000 artists. There have been just over 350 recorded sales, which has placed nearly $120,000 directly in the hands of the artists.

The feature artist of this exhibition is Colleen Reid. Reid’s artwork explores the ideas of nature, beauty and the man-made world as well as their intertwined relationships. In Reid’s most recent series of works on display now at MIP, she has been exploring the beauty of historical architecture in interaction with nature. Through her art, Reid hopes to underline the importance of our historic buildings as well as the power of our natural environment, and the importance of our protection of both. Reid considers herself fortunate to live in Hamilton, a city rich with both historic architecture and nature.

Construction!

Due to some planned construction activity on the 2nd floor of the Atrium, we have had to move some artwork around. All work on the north wall and around the rear elevator has been moved to the freight elevator area, the south wall or the south exit hallway on 2A. A few pieces on the south wall were moved to the south exit hallway or the freight elevator area on 2A. The locations for all moved work have been updated on our website.

Exhibit 34 was installed the weekend of June 25-26, and the artwork locations were uploaded to our Gallery page today. Many thanks to our volunteers who give up a good chunk of their weekend to get the exhibit curated and installed. It looks great. Do plan on coming to the opening on July 28th.
